Great Scott
If you think watching golf is like
observing paint dry or tea brew, well, climb down from the ladder and turn off
the kettle because today, even though it’s Monday, there’s no excuse for
feeling below par: Adam Scott has become the first Australian to EVER win the
USPGA Masters golf tournament.
30 years after nabbing the America’s Cup, a
feat which by chance was retold on the ABC’s Australian Story tonight, an Aussie golfer has clubbed them again,
this time raiding the yankee closet to claim the famous green jacket.
In suiting up, Scott has turned the colour
green into the new black and cuts a fine figure. Girls, if you love Black
Caviar, you’ll adore the now single Adam Scott, just like tennis glamour Ana
Ivanovic did. Bet she’d chip, putt and drive her way back into his life right
now if she could. The guy’s got the looks and the game to match.
Golf is akin to hitting a Birdseye frozen
pea with a toothpick. It's a huge waste of time to some, is cluttered with
archaic rules and played by people with weirdo names such as Fuzzy, Bubba,
Vijay and a randy Tiger. But then along comes ‘our’ Adam, a straight shooter
with a straightforward name to match his singular purpose.
During the playoff to decide the Masters
winner, Angel Cabrera was no seraph on Scott’s shoulder. Second only to the
Pope, the affable Argentinean golfer played Cupid as he fired arrows either
side of the flagstick, trying in vain to sink Scott’s quest for glory and
pierce every Aussie’s heart in the process.
“Four!!” Be gone Julia, Tony, Kevin and all
your Independent mates. Get thee to the back page, it’s time for a true
champion to be the lead story. Scott deserves to sing from the rooftop of
Butler Cabin where he was crowned Masters champion, for he’s found his voice
and seal of approval from Delta and all Australians.
Greg
Norman fell agonizingly short of winning the Masters on three occasions but
ever since he has played a key role in nurturing young golfers, particularly
Scott. “There was one guy that inspired a nation of golfers and that's Greg
Norman. He's been incredible to me and all the young golfers in Australia and
part of this definitely belongs to him,” said Scott,
referring to Norman as the flag bearer. All-time nice guy or what?
“This is one notch in a belt that we’ve
never got” said Scott, speaking after winning the playoff. Call it a hole in
one Adam, you’ve done good son.
